Chillers remove heat from a liquid. There are three different types of chillers: air-cooled, water-cooled, and evaporative-cooled. Air-cooled chillers are much like a refrigerator in that they use evaporation and condensation of a refrigerant with the evaporative side cooling the liquid and the condensive side cooled by ambient air. Water-cooled chillers use water to pull the heat away from the product and often incorporate the use of cooling towers. Evaporative-cooled chillers or evaporative condensing chillers use the evaporation of water for heat removal. Cooling towers are heat removal devices used to transfer process waste heat to the atmosphere through evaporation. Cooling towers are used in a circulating cooling water system like a water cooled chiller.
